Esterbrook Fountain Pens

Esterbrook fountain pens are manufactured in USA since the 1850’s. A Cornish Quaker who migrated to the United States in 1856, Richard Esterbrook began manufacturing writing implements under the name of The Steel Pen Manufacturing Company. He introduced the country to quality pens that were also affordable. With just fifteen employees the business began in 1858 in Camden, New Jersey with the name of The Esterbrook Steel Pen Mfg. Company. At the height of production they had 450 employees and manufactured six hundred thousand pens per day. By 1920 fountain pens were more popular than pens which had to be dipped into the ink supply and the Esterbrook company met the demand with high output production of the fountain pen.

Today Esterbrook fountain pens are considered collectibles and many still remain fully functional and write quite efficiently. Made with either stainless steel or gold nibs, writers loved the interchangeable by user nib units that could answer the demand of any style and type of writing. Esterbrook fountain pens were aimed toward the economy market and students in particular appreciated the quality as well as the prices of these durable pens.

Look for some models like the LJ (long slender design), Relief Pens, and Dollar Pens. Dollar pens, made from 1934 until 1942, were named for the price of them, which was very reasonable for quality writing implements. A famous artist, Carl Barks, who worked as an artist for Walt Disney used Esterbrook pens (model 356) for his drawings of Donald Duck.

From the late 40’s through the late 50’s Esterbrook made the J series fountain pens which came in three sizes: Full J size, LJ (long and slender in design), and the SJ which was a short and slender fountain pen. Colors in which Esterbrook Fountain Pens of the J series came included solid colors of olive drab or black, also marbled varieties in red, blue, gray, brown, and green.
