With a history dating back to around the tenth century, first reservoir type pens made the art of writing popular until fountain style refillable pens came along in the mid 1800’s. They were found to be much easier to fill and write with while also being much less messy. The fountain pen’s writing point or nib is usually made from stainless steel, gold, or iridium which is a form of platinum. A later invention called a cartridge was filled with ink and replaced as needed making fountain pen refilling easier and much safer. A combination of gravity along with capillary action allows the ink to flow onto writing paper without the need of applying pressure, enabling the nib to flex and so the writer could use his writing tool to apply wider or finer lines as required.

Look for Lamy fountain pens in various models and with some still being manufactured, they are also considered to be collectibles and remain popular with those who prefer a high quality writing implements. The Lamy ABC model is designed for children learning to write. Made from Maple wood, the cap includes a name sticker which identifies the pen as belonging to the individual student. The 2000 model is still being manufactured and is a piston fill pen which takes only bottled ink. The body is made from a fiberglass resin and remains quite popular. Other models of Lamy fountain pen include the Safari, Dialog 3, and Studio.
