As a school teacher who became tired of hearing his students complain of how their pens became easily broken with daily use, George S. Parker started manufacturing his own pens and began his Parker Pen Company back in 1888. He vowed to make a pen that was both sturdy and pleasing to look at. The reputation grew and many chose a Parker fountain pen because of its solid construction, good writing quality, and styling that was built to last. Some early models of Parker pens include the Duofold, known for its writing performance and innovative design, the Dimonite which was had a super hard 14k gold plated finish in a champagne colored tint. The Parker Sonnet Fountain Pen came with a converter and cartridge for ease in refilling and an 18k white gold nib of medium size. The Vector was an affordably priced fountain pen with a medium nib and formed from Rhodium plated steel and included a cartridge for refilling ease.

Each Parker pen was made popular due to its craftsmanship and reputation for being highly reliable. Those student writers who got the ball rolling for Parker pens cherish their Parker pens to this day and are considered a popular collectors item.

The Parker Fountain Pen's writing point or nib is usually made from gold or stainless steel or even some form of a platinum material such as iridium. Later models had cartridges that were filled with ink and replaced as needed, thus making the filling of the fountain pen a far easier and safer task. A combination of capillary action combined with gravity allow the fine viscous ink to flow onto paper without the need to apply much pressure, and this allowed the nib to be flexible so that the writing could be wider or finer as determined by the writer and their needs.
