From its humble beginning in 1918 Tokyo Japan the business expanded to Singapore, London, New York, Malaysia, and Shanghai in 1926 and later became the Pilot Ink Company. Recently the Pilot line expanded to include the BeGreen pens and pencils which are made mostly of recycled content, thus joining the “green” revolution to help save our planet.
Making the typical fountain pen affordable today can be contributed to the business end of a fountain pen which is called the nib. It draws ink from a bottle or else is supplied from a cartridge that is refillable. Many of the popular models of Pilot brand pens include a cartridge which makes refilling quick and easy with little or no mess. Look for the Varsity or V pen which is a disposable pen that is so affordable it is thrown away when it becomes empty. A popular classic fountain pen, the Pilot V4 (VPen) comes with seven different colors of ink in one convenient package and is disposable when the ink is gone. The Vortex is a pocket size fountain pen that is easily refillable. There is a Vanishing Point model Pilot pen called the Capless which has a retractable nib. The Pilot Petit1 Fountain Pens and the Pilot Birdie are smallish pens with student use in mind and may be either disposable or refillable and with a brushed steel body. A popular favorite is the Pilot Bamboo pen model, shaped in the form of a stem of bamboo with a rhodium plated clip and 18k gold nib.
