Investors often choose smaller items like the fountain pen as a collectible. Look into rare old fountain pens for their ability to hold their value while remaining completely useful as a tool to write in an elegant style. Fountain pens most often consist of a body, a nib or tip, an ink reservoir, and a cap.

A combination of capillary action combined with gravity will allow the fine viscous ink to flow out and onto paper without needing to apply much pressure, and this allows the nib to be somewhat flexible so that the writing can be finer or wider according to the writer and his or her wishes.

The pen’s body may be thick or thin and long or short, depending on the owner’s preference. They are often made of some form of metal, wood, or hard rubber with modern versions most likely molded in a hard plastic. The pen’s nib is the “business end” of a fountain pen and distributes ink in various widths of line from the reservoir. Typically the nib is made of 14k gold plating. The ink is held in reserve in either a refillable tank that uses an eyedropper to fill or a replaceable cartridge.

Wood fountain pens can be found manufactured from exotic woods and make an excellent gift. Look for wood pens made with Bird’s Eye Maple, Black Walnut, Aromatic Cedar, Ebony, Rosewood and many other fine wood materials.
